Some businesses open and close in the span of a few years. Others become part of the fabric of a community. Not just for what they do, but how they do it. McGregor’s Shoe Service has been part of Christchurch since 1880. It’s survived two world wars, two earthquakes, the COVID pandemic, and served generations of customers.
“It rocked around a little bit, but she survived. Never fell down,” says owner Adam McGregor, remembering the original shop building, which stood strong through both Christchurch quakes. “And I was in it for both of them.”
These days, McGregor’s has relocated, but the spirit of the place remains unchanged.
A Family Business, Built to Last
Adam started working at McGregor’s when he was 16. His father Derek bought the business in the 1950s for £500. Before that, it was known as Brigas, opened by George Thomas and his family, who lived on site. “Retired probably about 40 years ago,” Adam says of his dad. “And I took over the business.”
Now, Adam is the one keeping the family legacy alive, not just through repairs, but relationships.
His approach has built trust across generations. Parents bring in the shoes they’ve had for years, and their kids do the same. And one day, maybe their kids will too.
“It's a bit of a generation thing as well, which is kind of cool to look after one family through their kids and watch their kids grow up.”
Dedication to the Craft

Watching Adam work is a real privilege. He is a master of his craft, working with precision and patience. For every stitch and sole, Adam uses traditional machinery and old-school methods that have stood the test of time. He’s not just fixing shoes, he’s restoring them to their former glory.
“I just love looking after quality footwear and bringing them back to brand new. It's very self-satisfying.”
McGregor’s is also one of the few shoe repairers officially endorsed by R.M. Williams, a testament to the standard of Adam’s work.
In a fast-paced world, Adam’s commitment to doing things properly stands out. He takes pride in his work, every day, every pair.
“It's not about just fixing the shoes. It's about preserving something for someone.”
From Coins to Contactless
McGregor's might have heritage roots, but the business isn’t stuck in the past. Adam has embraced change where it matters, especially when it comes to technology.
“The biggest change has probably been a social media presence, which is a definite in this day and age for a small business,” says Adam. “Facebook and TikTok and Instagram... just a great way of showing what we do to people.”
And the way customers pay? That’s come a long way too.
“Dad would be blown away if he thought you could just touch your watch on an EFTPOS machine and pay your bill.”
Technology That Keeps Up
McGregor’s uses Eftpos NZ for quick, seamless payments that fit into the rhythm of his day. It just works, and lets Adam stay focused on what matters: his craft and his customers.
"Our Eftpos NZ terminals just work. Day-in, day-out they are so reliable and easy to use. And if we ever need help, it's just a phone call away".
Whether it’s an R.M. Williams boot or a family heirloom, Adam treats every pair with the same care. And thanks to simple tech behind the scenes, the rest of the experience is just as smooth.
A Business That Stays True to Its Sole
McGregor’s Shoe Service might have moved from its original site, but its values haven’t shifted at all. For 145 years, it’s been about looking after people (and their shoes) with craft and care.
