From 30 April 2026, EFTPOS terminals that run on PCI 4.X will be disconnected from the network. Payments NZ has confirmed this deadline and there are no extensions. If your device is on the list, you’ll need to upgrade before the cut-off to keep taking payments. Here are answers to the most common questions merchants are asking.
When will EFTPOS terminals be disconnected in New Zealand?
From 30 April 2026, PCI 4.X EFTPOS terminals will start being removed from the network. Disconnections won’t all happen on the same day, but after the deadline your terminal could stop working at any time.
What happens if I don’t upgrade my EFTPOS terminal by April 2026?
If your device is PCI 4.X, it will be disconnected from the payment network after the deadline.
Who sets the PCI 4.X EFTPOS deadline in New Zealand?
The deadline is set by Payments NZ, which manages EFTPOS standards in New Zealand. They follow global PCI rules to decide when older devices are retired.
Why do EFTPOS terminals have expiry or sunset dates?
Older devices eventually become less secure as technology and fraud methods change. Sunset dates make sure businesses move to newer, safer devices.
