Mobile EFTPOS vs. mPOS: What’s the Difference?

You’ve got two main options when it comes to mobile payments:

  1. Mobile EFTPOS Terminals – Full-featured EFTPOS machines that connect via Wi-Fi or a SIM card. These offer the same security, speed, and functionality as a countertop terminal, but in a portable package.

  2. mPOS (Mobile Point-of-Sale) Devices – Smaller devices that connect to a payment network via Wi-Fi or a SIM card. mPOS devices are designed for micro-businesses with lower transaction volumes. They come with limitations like no charging cradles, no receipt printer and limited support & functionality.

For small to medium businesses that need reliable, fast payments with full support, a Mobile EFTPOS terminal is usually the better choice.

What Are the Costs Involved?

 

1. Monthly Device Fees

  • Leasing an EFTPOS terminal – Subscription-based pricing, usually $30 – $40 + GST per month, depending on model and contract term. This includes 24/7 support, compliance upgrades, and onsite support for troubleshooting.

  • mPOS Devices – $29 – $38 + GST per month. This includes 24/7 support and compliance upgrades.

3. Payment Network Fees

  • There are two payment networks in NZ: Verifone and Worldline

  • Worldline charges $18.90 + GST per terminal per month, while Verifone charges $15.00 + GST per terminal per month

  • Most mPOS devices available in NZ connect to the Verifone network
  • Eftpos NZ primarily connects devices to the Verifone network

4. Internet & SIM Fees

  • Wi-Fi Connection – No extra cost (aside from your regular internet plan).

  • SIM Card Connection – If you need mobile data, expect a $12.95 + GST per terminal per month fee, unless included in your rental plan.

5. Merchant Service Fees (MSF)

  • Credit card and contactless transactions incur merchant service fees

  • On mPOS devices, accepting credit cards is mandatory

  • With Mobile EFTPOS terminals, credit card acceptance is optional
