Technology has transformed many things in life including the process of catching a cab. Gone are the days of hailing a taxi and fumbling around in the backseat to get cash out of your wallet.

Corporate Cabs recently took the opportunity to update their payment offering to create a streamlined customer payment experience with big benefits for their customers, drivers and back office using our innovative new Android payment technology.

We’ve been working with Corporate Cabs for around 15 years, and this ongoing relationship has led to a number of unique innovations. When they recently came to us with their custom Android app, we created an on-device point-of-sale (POS) solution to provide a seamless experience for their passengers to complement their professional service.

Keep reading to find out more about how we achieved this new innovation and what it means for the future of their business.

About Corporate Cabs

about CCCorporate Cabs have been providing their professional services for 30 years now, and have become one of the leading luxury taxi companies with cabs all around New Zealand. They pride themselves on giving each customer a first-class experience and are committed to going the extra mile to offer comfort and satisfaction on each journey.

Whether you’re travelling for business or pleasure, each driver will provide you with exceptional service, from personally greeting you on arrival, to opening and closing the door to their immaculately presented vehicle.

But they weren’t willing to stop there. The team at Corporate Cabs were driven to enhance the customer experience even further, by customising a simple and intuitive payment process that would make the journey even smoother.

The Goal

goalCameron Alison, CEO of Corporate Cabs, has been with the company for 2 and a half years, starting his role not long before the Covid-19 pandemic started. Business in this new environment was challenging, but it also created new opportunities for technological advancements within the company, including the company's payments process with help from Eftpos NZ. The goal was to improve the efficiency and experience for both the passengers and the drivers and to streamline the payment process in a way that benefited everyone.

We helped Corporate Cabs to realise this goal with an on-device POS solution that works alongside their pre-journey process using their booking apps and website.

The Solution

solutionCorporate Cabs developed their own app, and after presenting it back to us we were able to create the first working prototype of the on-device POS solution. We deployed the app onto our new Android terminal for a seamless payment experience that would fundamentally change the way they received payment in their vehicles.

Their previous system was much more manual, which left a lot of room for error and slowed down the payment process for the passenger and the driver. This new on-device solution is not only faster and more efficient, but it reflects the Corporate Cabs brand to enhance their professional service.

Getting the Drivers On Board

driversAfter a few adjustments and iterations, it was time to roll the solution out to the wider fleet, and after speaking to one of the drivers, it’s clear that the new terminal is a winner.

Corporate Cabs driver, Robin Barrett, has been driving for the company for 11 years, so he’s seen many technological changes during his time. He explains that the main difference between the old EFTPOS system and the new one is the process of entering the fee details.

In the old system the driver had to enter payment amounts manually into the EFTPOS terminal to complete payment, which not only dragged out the process for the passenger but also left a margin for keying errors by the driver. With the new solution, the driver simply swipes the screen on the device and selects the job details. The correct fare amount then automatically appears on the terminal, ready for payment.

From here, the passenger just needs to tap their card to pay, and then they can be on their way. Robin believes some of the best features include:

  • The speed of the process for both passenger and driver
  • The seamless connection between the taxi unit and the terminal
  • The Android terminal's big screen with which makes it easier for the passenger to see the transaction.
  • The battery life is another huge plus, with the terminal lasting between 2-3 days depending on the number of transactions per day.

The Results

the resultsAccording to CEO Cam, the drivers love this integration because it definitely makes their lives easier. Corporate Cabs had to be mindful of the fact that not everyone in their driver network are early adopters of technology, and for some of them, developments like these can be a scary thing.

Thankfully, the uptake from the drivers as operators was great, and this intuitive innovation made the transition much easier for them, along with the rest of the team.

Cam would absolutely recommend this solution to other businesses after seeing the results. It not only achieved the primary goal of significantly enhancing the customer experience but also reduced the number of errors thanks to the automation. This has resulted in less admin for the back office staff when it came time to reconcile the transactions - a win all round!
