Mary Potter Hospice has been providing palliative care services free of charge to Wellingtonians for over 40 years. The hospice faces a financial gap between the cost of its operations and the funding it receives from the government. To address this gap, Mary Potter Hospice relies on fundraising events, including its popular Strawberry Festivals.
As consumer preferences shifted towards cashless transactions, the hospice recognised that relying solely on cash payments was becoming increasingly ineffective. To adapt, Mary Potter Hospice partnered with Eftpos NZ to offer cashless payment options at fundraising events, streamlining the transaction process and meeting donor expectations.
To further streamline the donation experience, Mary Potter Hospice adopted the Donate App, an Android-based EFTPOS solution designed to simplify fundraising. The app allows donors to quickly select from pre-set donation amounts or manually enter a custom amount. Donate allows you to customise the pre-set amounts to meet specific needs, offering flexibility for a wide range of fundraising activities.
By offering a straightforward, cashless donation method, the Donate App reduces the complexity of collecting EFTPOS payments at fundraising events. With minimal volunteer training required, the app empowers staff to focus on delivering an engaging event, while ensuring all donations are securely processed and tracked.
This shift minimised the risks and effort associated with handling large sums of cash, such as theft or errors during reconciliation. With EFTPOS, all transactions are recorded electronically, providing greater transparency and making it easier to track donations.
With EFTPOS terminals readily available, attendees can now enjoy the event without the need for cash, making it more convenient to support the hospice. Ross McLeod, Director of Fundraising, Marketing & Communications at Mary Potter Hospice, highlighted the value of this partnership: "EFTPOS has been an awesome supporter of Mary Potter Hospice and is a true partner when we run these large community events."
The Mary Potter Hospice sold 7,285 servings of strawberries and ice cream sold at the 2024 Strawberry Festivals and saw a 45% increase in the use of EFTPOS over cash transactions, contributing to a 15% overall revenue growth. These funds will help the hospice to continue providing its vital services.
